The War Memorial

John Ellis designed the War Memorial. It stands on Black Hill, Stonehaven. It has a breath-taking view and is designed for a good walk.

The names of those who died during the First War are inscribed in the central pillar. Around the sides, are the names of the people from the Second War.

The War Memorial can be seen from most parts of Stonehaven. The monument was unveiled at 3pm on Sunday the 20th May 1923 during a dedication ceremony. The War Memorial is 1km South East of Stonehaven.


Who was John Ellis?

John Ellis was an architect who built the War Memorial, that still stands today on Black Hill. It represented all the men that fought and died in World War I and II.

When did the War Memorial open to the public?
Sunday the 20th May 1923, during a dedication ceremony.

Why did they build the War Memorial?
They built the War Wemorial to represent the people who died in the First and Second World Wars.



In Memory Of

The names on the plaques are the names of ex pupils and masters who fought and died for Great Britain in the Second World War.
The Poppies
The poppies are there to symbolise the respect and gratitude we hold to them and that if they were here with us today we would take our hats off to them in thanks because without there bravery we may not be here today.
